Gérard Basset is the ultimate reference in the world of wine. Having won the title of “UK Sommelier of the Year” several times, he became the Best International Sommelier for French Wines in 1992 and Europe’s Best Sommelier in 1996. He took part 6 times in the World’s Best Sommelier competition, which takes place every three years, finishing second-equal once in 2007 and second twice in 1992 and 2004. He became World Champion Sommelier in 2010 in his sixth and final attempt.
In 2013, the well-known British wine magazine Decanter awarded him the Man of the Year title: this was the first and only time to date that a sommelier has been awarded this prestigious trophy. And he’s also the only person in the world to hold the titles of Master Sommelier, Master of Wine et Wine MBA at the same time.
More recently, in 2017, he added to this extraordinary collection of honours the prestigious Master of Science in Wine Management degree awarded by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine.
Gérard basset : "L’eau d’Ogeu est l’alliée des grandes tables"
"Water is an essential part of a successful tasting. I taste wines all over the world and I’m very careful about the mineral content and characteristics of the water that I’m offered in the major competitions or large-scale events. For example, I try to avoid waters that are too strong-tasting or too salty, as they disrupt the difficult work of sensory analysis. If you’re tasting a large number of wines, in groups of ten or twelve, for example, I recommend drinking water between each group rather than between each wine.
I believe that Ogeu is the ideal water for sommeliers and tasting competitions. With its neutral taste and low mineral content, it stands out for its low salt content, doesn’t cause any interference and doesn’t spoil the complex, demanding nature of the tasting exercise. I’m surprised at how light it is on the palate and how totally neutral it is on the nose, a characteristic of natural mineral waters of very high quality.
Ogeu water is to be found on all the best tables and I must admit that its superb, simple, clean-lined glass bottle is a real invitation to taste it.
And then the water comes from the Pyrenees. Collected at the end of its long and patient journey, Ogeu water also tells a story: a story of the same family that has operated its spring at the foot of the mountains for nearly 200 years. A great regional adventure and a demonstration of outstanding know-how.
It has a neutral taste and is therefore ideal for drinking at mealtimes or any other time of day. Ideally suited to preparing food for babies, Ogeu natural mineral water is a gift from our mountains. …
